What is a DMO (Dynamic Movement Orthosis)?
Dynamic movement orthoses (DMOs) are dynamic elastomeric fabric orthoses that are used for the management of many medical conditions including cerebral palsy, scoliosis, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis. DMOs can be pre-sized (DMO Essentials) or custom sized depending upon the patient’s needs.
How long will my DMO last?
Longevity of the device depends upon the rate of growth for the wearer as well as activity of the user. In general, most DMO's will last from 8-12 months for growing children. Adults can expect slightly longer durations so long as their anatomy stays consistent.
How can I tell when my child outgrows their DMO?
If you begin to see reddened areas that do not go away within 20 minutes of removing the device, and/or if becomes more difficult to put the device on or take it off, see your orthotist. We encourage all patients to schedule routine follow-up visits with their orthotist to ensure proper fit.
Will wearing a DMO cause my child to overheat in the summer?
The DMO is a form fitting device that fits snugly against your body. During summer months you should take care to ensure that there are not too many layers of clothing on your child during excessively hot days. The DMO does not have to be covered by your usual attire.
What do I need to do to start the process of getting a DMO?
You will need a prescription from your doctor requesting a DMO for your particular needs eg: TLSO, wrist, leg, etc.
How do I clean my DMO?
We recommend you wash your DMO every two or three days using cold water on the gentle cycle with typical laundry detergent. Do not put the DMO in the dryer as this will likely result in the DMO shrinking and becoming unsalvageable.
How long will it take for me to be fit with my DMO after I am measured?
This depends upon several factors. Your particular insurance may require supporting documentation (Letters of Medical Necessity) from your doctor, following your initial measurement appointment with Boston O&P. Your insurance may also require that your claim be submitted for a "predetermination" or "prior authorization" which may result in a delay of your orthosis being ordered. Once your DMO is approved to be ordered it takes approximately 3-4 weeks to arrive from the manufacturer before you can expect to be fitted.
Some DMOs are pre-sized (DMO Essentials) and might cut the delivery time in half.
How many hours per day does my child need to wear their DMO?
Your prescribing physician should provide you with your specific wear schedule. In general, all DMO's are worn during the day and never worn to bed.
